Today marks 68 years since the beginning, for America, of direct military involvement in World War II.
More than a year before the war was over, Congress and the president enacted a law to help prevent a renewed Depression and give returning service personnel additional chances for a secure economic future.
It was the original G.I. Bill.
Now Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and others are working on a means of expanding the G.I. Bill even further.
Murray is a senior member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee. Her legislation would provide additional employment training and support for veterans.
National unemployment is at 10 percent, with 15.4 million Americans out of work.
After returning home six months ago, members of the 81st Combat Team of the Washington National Guard are in dismal financial condition, Herald Washington, D.C., correspondent Les Blumenthal recently reported.
