RALEIGH, N.C. -- People in the highest echelons of former Gov. Mike Easley's campaign and office could be required to testify next week in a state Board of Elections hearing that for the first time will scrutinize a governor's campaign apparatus.

Top-level officials at the state Democratic Party also were among nearly 30 subpoenaed witnesses made public Friday as part of the Elections Board's months-long inquiry into possible law-breaking in Easley's campaign and in the state Democratic Party.

"This list is a who's-who of the Democratic Party," said Joe Sinsheimer, a consultant to Democrats who has closely followed issues surrounding Easley.

The hearing by the board of three Democrats and two Republicans starts Monday and could last a week. It could result in an exoneration, fines or a referral to prosecutors that laws were broken.

Leading the list of possible witnesses is a trio of Easley donors and supporters who were involved in a 2005 coastal land deal in which records now show Easley, a Democrat who left office in January after two terms, bought a lot and accepted a $137,000 discount at closing.
