Texas law requires 9-11 holiday for firefighters

An effort by state lawmakers to give Texas firefighters a 9-11 holiday isn't exactly thrilling local fire chiefs.

Rep. Armando Walle, D-Houston, filed the bill this year.

State law requires that firefighters have the same number of vacation days and holidays as other city employees, and giving firefighters an extra holiday wasn't the goal. The version of the bill signed by Gov. Rick Perry directs fire departments to designate one existing holiday as "Sept. 11."

The Fort Worth Fire Department will designate Labor Day as the holiday, Lt. Kent Worley said.
