CONWAY — Gov. Mark Sanford will allow the public in on an ethics investigation into whether Sanford violated state ethics rules in his use of the state of plane and his acceptance of private plane rides from friends and political allies.

Two weeks ago the state's top Republicans — Attorney General Henry McMaster, Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell and House Speaker Bobby Harrell — asked the state Ethics Commission to review Sanford's travel.

All reviews by the state Ethics Commission are confidential. But anyone subject to a review as the option of opening it up the public.

Until today, Sanford had not decided on if he would keep the process secret or open it up to the public.

"In the continued spirit of a fair and transparent process, I am today announcing that I'll be waiving confidentiality as the Ethics Commission studies some of the allegations made in the press and by political detractors. Our administration has nothing to hide. We would welcome the public to scrutinize our record, just as the Ethics Commission will do," Sanford said.

Sanford said his administration has pushed for more open government and would welcome the scrutiny.
