RALEIGH — The Triangle's three Democratic congressmen tried to build support for President Obama's health care proposal today, saying it would help ensure that when middle class people became seriously ill, or changed or lost jobs, they would not be left to pay their own medical bills.
In their first joint appearance since coming home during the August congressional recess, the lawmakers scoffed at critics' cries of socialism, saying the president's plan echoed those put forward by Bullmoose Party presidential candidate Theodore Roosevelt in 1912 and Democratic President Harry Truman in 1948.
"I know know one middle class family very well where a member had an allergy attack," Rep. David Price said. "They ended up having to pay $1,000 per month" in premiums.
The three congressmen — Price, Rep. Brad Miller of Raleigh and Rep. Bob Etheridge of Lillington — appeared at a private event at Wake Health Services, a community health center in East Raleigh.
