Round-up of Daily Violence in Iraq - Friday 7 August, 2009

The daily Iraq violence report is compiled by McClatchy Newspapers Special Correspondents in Baghdad from police, military and medical reports. This is not a comprehensive list of all violence in Iraq, much of which goes unreported. It's posted without editing as transmitted to McClatchy's Washington Bureau.

Baghdad

A roadside bomb targeted Shiite worshippers on their way home from pilgrimage to the city of Karbala in al Hamza Square, Sadr City, northeastern Baghdad, at 9 a.m. Friday, killing three and injuring eight others.

A roadside bomb targeted pilgrims in Zayuna, eastern Baghdad, at 10.30 a.m. Friday, killing two pilgrims and injuring nine others.

A roadside bomb targeted pilgrims in Muthafar Square, Sadr City, northeastern Baghdad at 10.30 a.m. Friday killing one pilgrim and injuring seven others.

A parked car bomb targeted a police patrol in al Jemiyah open air market in Khadhraa neighbourhood, western Baghdad at 8.30 p.m. Friday killing three policemen, three civilians and injured at least 30 civilians. The explosion also caused material damages to the shops and houses nearby.

Nineveh

A car bomb driven by a suicide bomber targeted a crowd outside al Rashidiyah Mosque in Shraikhan, a northerly suburb of Mosul City that is inhabited by a Shiite Turkoman majority at 1.15 p.m. Friday. The explosion killed at least 36 civilians and injured 100 others. Iraqi police said that the toll is likely to rise because many of the injured are in critical condition.

Gunmen shot and killed one policeman while on leave in Bab al Toob, central Mosul, Friday afternoon.

Gunmen attacked a checkpoint in Nimrood district, 35 km to the south of Mosul Friday afternoon, killing two policemen.

An IED was planted in front of a house in which a Christian family lives in Dargazliyah neighbourhood in Mosul, Friday morning injuring two females.

Gunmen walked out of a car and shot dead a woman walking down the street al Islah al Ziraai neighbourhood, western Mosul, Thursday evening.

Gunmen raided a house in al Arabi neighbourhood late Thursday. They killed a man inside the house using pistols fitted with silencers.

Sulaimaniyah

Insurgents attacked a checkpoint in Darbendikhan district, near Darbendikhan dam at 1.30 a.m. Friday killing one traffic policeman and injuring two others.
