Leavenworth County may be the prison capital of the United States, but don't expect leaders to roll out the welcome mat for Guantanamo Bay detainees. But in Michigan, a community desperate to keep a state prison from closing isn't as quick to dismiss the concept.
The White House stressed Monday that no final decisions have been made about where Guantanamo detainees might be transferred.
The Obama administration is eyeing two possibilities for putting the detainees on trial: a one-of-a-kind superjail in Leavenworth or Standish, Mich., or proceedings in big-city courtrooms in the nations capital, New York and Virginia, according to The Associated Press.
On Monday in Leavenworth, national, state and local officials had no qualms about stating their views on bringing the detainees to Kansas.
"We dont want them here, U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback said. They should be treated with dignity and humanely, but it shouldnt be here.
He and others called the plan a patently bad idea, and Brownback said the transfer will not change the worlds opinion of us one iota.
