Gerald Walpin, the Americorps inspector general fired by President Obama in the wake of Walpin's investigation of Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, has filed a federal lawsuit seeking his reinstatement.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, last Friday, alleges that Walpin was fired illegally by the president and seeks his reinstatement.

The White House has said Walpin was removed properly and has claimed that at one meeting of the Americorps board — known formally as the Corporation for National and community Services — he appeared "disoriented."

Walpin told The Bee in an interview earlier this month that he was not feeling well that day but that there were no proper grounds for his dismissal.

A Senate committee is considering whether to hold hearings on his dismissal and has requested various documents related to the case from the board.
