Mother's Day spending nationwide is expected to drop 11 percent to an average of $123.89 per person this year, according to a National Retail Federation survey conducted by BIGresearch.
Some shop managers in Beaufort County said this week their total sales for Mother's Day have been about the same as last year, but people are spending differently.
"They're looking for more value," Hope Mims, spa manager of Faces DaySpa on Hilton Head Island said. "They're looking to make their dollars go farther."
Mims said Faces has tried to accommodate that demand by adding free gifts, such as bath bubbles and rose-scented candles, when customers make gift certificate purchases.
"We've been proactive in our planning," she said.
