Made oil, but smelled bad: Renewable fuel plant from turkey remains lays off workers

For many in Carthage, Mo., the renewable fuel plant was a dream and a nightmare.

The dream: To turn turkey guts, bones and feathers into oil, eventually expanding and reducing the nation’s dependence on foreign oil by half. The nightmare: The stomach-turning smell from processing the turkey waste that sometimes clouded the town.

Now the problem and the promise, which once attracted worldwide attention, may be over. Brian Appel, owner of Renewable Environmental Solutions, last month filed for Chapter 11 in bankruptcy court in New York and laid off about 50 employees at the plant.
