Might Kansas Gov. Sebelius go to Washington?

email this story print this story jump to comments

If Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is offered and accepts a post with the administration of President-elect Barack Obama, Kansas state government will look substantially different a few months from now.

Three of the six statewide offices -- governor, lieutenant governor and treasurer -- would change hands.

Whether Sebelius leaves or not, a Democrat will likely be appointed to fill the unexpired term of State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins, who won her bid Tuesday to unseat Democratic U.S. Rep. Nancy Boyda.

That would give Democrats control of four state offices -- governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and treasurer -- for the next two years.

If Sebelius leaves, Lt. Gov. Mark Parkinson would take over and could run as the incumbent in 2010.

If Sebelius isn't asked or decides not to go to Washington, she could run in 2010 for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Republican Sen. Sam Brownback, who has said he won't seek another term.

The day after Obama's election, Sebelius continued to dance around the speculation.

"I'm always flattered to have my name in circulation," she said Wednesday.
