LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Though Democrats heavily outnumber Republicans in Kentucky, most of the state's voters sided with Republican John McCain instead of Democrat Barack Obama for president.

Preliminary voting results show that McCain was leading throughout the state except in Jefferson and Fayette counties, the two most populous.

In the May Democratic primary, Obama also carried only Jefferson and Fayette, home of Louisville and Lexington.

If Obama takes the national election, it would mark the first time since 1960 that Kentucky did not support the eventual winner. That year, Republican Richard Nixon garnered nearly 54 percent of the vote in Kentucky but lost the presidential election to Democrat John F. Kennedy.
