Tom and Alberta Woodall mark their days - and 2008's seemingly endless political season - by trips to Boise State University, visits from their grandchildren, the antics of Alberta's pampered kitty Hermione, and the number of McCain/Palin signs disappearing from their yard.

Tom Woodall, a retired lieutenant colonel and visiting engineering professor at Boise State, sees life in black and white, right and wrong.

So it was definitely wrong, he said, when pranksters or politically minded thieves twice made off with several signs he'd posted supporting presidential candidate John McCain.

"One, it's thievery. Two, it's trespassing. And three, it's a sin," he said. "I got blown up and had two combat tours for people to have the right to steal my signs?"

The Woodalls aren't alone.

Political signs from all over Boise are disappearing, prompting police reports and angry letters and e-mails to the Statesman.

Presidential and Ada County Highway District candidates seem to trigger the most thievery.

Boise seems to be the sign-stealing capital, with four incidents reported to police; Nampa and Meridian police say they have had no reports of missing signs, and the Ada County Sheriff's Office reports just one.

But most people don't bother reporting the thefts, police say.
