Struggling KC area food pantries issue plea for help

email this story print this story jump to comments

If hard times have found you, you’re likely to find they’ve hit area food pantries too.

An Excelsior Springs pantry is completely out of cereal. A midtown Kansas City pantry no longer gives out snacks or juice. Another has no hygiene products.

Many pantries are in a double bind: More people are coming for help, but donations are down.

Sherry Gulling was lucky enough to arrive Thursday at the Salvation Army pantry in Grandview after an infusion of donations.

She said she waits until she is completely out of food before visiting.

"I don’t like to, but I’d rather get help than starve," Gulling said. "I hope they don't do away with the food pantry. It’s there to help people that really need it, like me and like people that’s got children."

Area pantry directors said they hope more people will do what was done Thursday in Grandview: Give help.
