Tropical Storm Hanna is on course to make landfall near the border of North and South Carolina between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. Saturday, with up to 5 inches of rain and high winds extending as far inland as Raleigh.

Strong winds are expected to start reaching the Raleigh-Durham area about 11 tonight, said Jason Beaman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Raleigh. A high wind warning extended into the area, with forecasters saying wind gusts could approach 50 mph overnight in the region.

In Wake County, officials urged people to stay off the roads and declared a state of emergency, establishing the authority for towns and the county to share emergency resources.

The county could experience strong thunderstorms, Wake officials said. A flash flood warning is in effect, though widespread flooding is not expected in Raleigh.
