Rain is now moving over Hilton Head Island and the National Weather Service said brief heavy rain will continue in Beaufort County until early Saturday morning.

A tornado watch has also been issued for Beaufort County and coastal areas of the Carolinas.

As of 5 p.m., a tropical storm warning remained in effect for the county and a hurricane watch is in effect from north of Edisto Beach into North Carolina. Tropical storm warnings now extend into Massachusetts.

Pete Mohlan of the weather service in Charleston said residents should start seeing rain and stronger winds in the next couple hours. The storm could drop between 3 and 7 inches of rain from coastal South Carolina through the Mid-Atlantic states, according to the weather service.
