Gina Ostini Miles, a Davis High School graduate, won a silver medal in equestrian eventing today in Hong Kong.

Miles, 34, and her 1,410-pound horse McKinlaigh moved from fourth place to second after the jumping competition in individual eventing, which also includes dressage and cross country. Miles' 56.10 penalty points trailed only gold medalist Hinrich Romeike of Germany, who finished with 54.20 penalty points aboard Marius.

Great Britain's Kristina Cook, riding Miners Frolic, earned the bronze medal with 57.40 penalty points.

Miles began riding when she was 7 and was inspired by watching the eventing competition at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

She and her husband, Morgan, manage a ranch in Creston, near San Luis Obispo, where they live with son Austin, 9, and daughter Taylor, 2.

The United States finished seventh in the eventing team competition.

Elsewhere in Olympic competition, defender Stephanie Cox, an Elk Grove High School graduate, came off the bench to help the United States women's soccer team in its convincing 4-0 victory over New Zealand at Shenyang Stadium.
