BEIJING - Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor have a couple of goals for the rest of this year.
First, they want to win another gold medal at these Summer Olympics.
Next, they'd both like to get pregnant.
In 2009, if all goes as they'd like, the champion American beach volleyball duo would again be playing in the sand. This time, though, they would be playing with their babies.
Their return to the sport they dominate after possible motherhood seems likely in Walsh's case but a bit more questionable for May-Treanor, according to interviews with the pair after their second win in these Olympics.
But that's getting a bit ahead of ourselves. The first order of business for the two laidback legends of their sport is to win gold again. They are 2-0 in pool play in these Olympics so far entering their match with a Norwegian team Thursday morning Beijing time (Wednesday night EDT).
Those two wins bring the pair's amazing set of streaks to 103 straight wins and 18 straight tournament victories, dating back to a loss last summer against the Chinese pair Jia Tian and Jie Wang. Do they worry about losing again here?
"We don't use the 'L' word," Walsh said. "We always think positive."
Walsh did lose something in the duo's first match in Beijing, however - her wedding ring. It came off in the drizzle as she attempted a block.
"It just rocketed into the sand," Walsh said. "I looked for it but couldn't find it."
The two kept playing and beat Japan in that match. Then several more matches were played on the court, kicking up the sand everywhere.
Yet the ring was eventually found. NBC used its slow-motion cameras to determine approximately where the ring had landed, and then volunteers wielding metal detectors scoured the sand until they came across it.
"I met the volunteer who found it and gave him some Olympic pins as a thank-you," Walsh said. "He was very sweet."
Walsh and May-Treanor hope that will not be the only time they find gold in Beijing.
"We feel like we're playing better and better," May-Treanor said.
The duo has been partners for nearly eight years and liken their relationship to a marriage that works because of constant communication. In real life, they both have gotten married since winning Olympic gold in Athens in 2004. Walsh married pro volleyball player Casey Jennings, and May-Treanor married Florida Marlins catcher Matt Treanor.
Walsh turns 30 later this week. May-Treanor is 31. Both believe it is an ideal time to start a family if they can.
"We're both getting older and think it's time to have kids," Walsh said. "I hope to be pregnant pretty soon after the Olympics."
May-Treanor said she wanted to be as well. "But first, I'm going to have to see my husband," she smiled. "We don't see each other nearly enough."
While Walsh believes she and Jennings could take their child along with them on the beach volleyball tour, May-Treanor said: "I'm a little different. I don't think I could do that."
So would they continue to play together in the 2012 Olympics?
"That's too far away," May-Treanor said. "Beijing, Beijing, Beijing. That's what we're concentrating on right now."
