Kansas City woman was pioneer for U.S. in team handball

We're now in an era in which elite athletes wear space-age uniforms and swimsuits to save fractions of seconds. They have every kind of technology available on their road to becoming Olympians.

But for Mary Phyl Dwight, that path started on a drive from Manhattan, Kan., to Ames, Iowa, where she watched a fuzzy black-and-white video of a sport she didn’t even understand.

To grasp how much the Olympics - and women’s sports in particular - has changed, let’s take a fun trip down memory lane with Dwight, a Raytown South graduate who competed in the 1984 Los Angeles Games in team handball.

"LA was … oh, wow, like I was in the dream-come-true world," said Dwight, who formerly coached volleyball, softball and basketball at Kansas State and who is now a physical-education teacher at UMKC.
