Kentucky's Jockey Club calls for horseracing to ban steroids

Two days before a congressional hearing on drugs and horse racing, the Jockey Club's Thoroughbred Safety Committee recommended banning steroids and reforming the use of whips — both issues that came under increased public scrutiny during this year's Triple Crown season.

The panel, formed after the death of Eight Belles in the Kentucky Derby, also wants to ban traction devices such as "toe grabs" on front horseshoes.

Stuart S. Janney III, chairman of the safety committee, hailed the recommendations as a "very hopeful sign of unity and commitment."
