CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Angel McClain-McCaskill realized it was costing more than $400 a month to commute about 20 miles to her uptown job. That's more than a car payment. So since February, the mother-of-three catches the bus every workday for $104 a month. It drops her off a block from her Wachovia bank job.
"I thought I would never have gas prices as a decision-maker in my life," said the loan analyst. "I just pray I don't have to leave during the workday on any emergency."
The historically high price of gasoline has stressed many Charlotte commuters who need their uptown jobs but live in the outer rings of the metro area where property is more affordable. The result is increasing the number of commuters taking the bus, car pooling, working from home and even looking for jobs closer to home.
