What Clinton said Friday in Kentucky

LOUISVILLE — Although U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton hasn't given up her fight in the Democratic presidential contest, she aimed her sharpest rhetoric Friday at Republicans — specifically President Bush — and called for Democrats to unite behind their nominee in November.
"The world will breathe a sigh of relief when George Bush and Dick Cheney hand over the keys to the White House," Clinton told the more than 1,200 people at a Kentucky Democratic Party fund-raiser in Louisville. "With your hard work it will be a Democrat who walks through that door."
Clinton didn't mention Barack Obama, but said Democrats need a nominee who goes "toe to toe with John McCain."
Obama was invited to the event but campaigned in Oregon Friday — a fact that Clinton supporters noted. "We're putting Obama's picture on a carton of milk to see if you can find him in Kentucky," said Terry McBrayer, the former state party chairman, who introduced Clinton.
U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth of Louisville apologized to the crowd for Obama's absence. He said Obama has promised to be in the Bluegrass state to campaign next week.
