Rotating winds — possibly a funnel cloud or tornado — forced the temporary shutdown of parts of Dallas/Fort Worth Airport and the cancellation of 1,000 American Airlines flights nationwide, including much of the airline's D/FW operation.
A total of 550 departures from D/FW were canceled, airport officials said. That's nearly two-thirds of the airport's scheduled 900 departures. American canceled 750 arrivals and departures on the main airline, and about 250 flights on American Eagle, its regional affiliate. Most of those flights were out of D/FW Airport, officials said.
Some airport concessions remained open overnight, and the airport provided cots and other services for passengers forced to stay the night.
