Robert A. Rankin is the editor overseeing government and politics coverage, as well as national and international economics. He joined the Knight Ridder Washington bureau in 1987, covering economics and later the Clinton White House. He became an editor in 2000.
Before he joined the bureau, Rankin wrote editorials for The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Miami Herald, where he shared in a Pulitzer Prize. He broke into journalism in 1972 as a reporter for The Richmond News Leader and later covered energy policy for Congressional Quarterly in Washington, D.C.
He was a Bagehot Fellow in economics journalism at Columbia University. He holds an M.A. in government from the University of Virginia and a B.A. in political science from Randolph-Macon College.
